BRIEF HISTORY OF HUTHER BROTHERS

Warren B. and Angus E. Huther founded Huther Brothers Saw Manufacturing Company in 1880. The brothers had learned the saw smith trade from the R. Hoe Company of New York, and started their shop at 234 Mill Street, now the High Falls District, in Rochester, NY. The company produced many different kinds of saw blades, and offered re-sharpening.

Huther Brothers Saw Manufacturing Company developed and patented the Dado set, and other types of wood grooving cutters. Incorporating in 1906 as Huther Brothers, Inc., the company was outgrowing its space and moved soon thereafter to 1290 University Avenue. Huther Brothers continued manufacturing saws, groovers, and other types of cutters for nearly eighty years. With the advent of plastics and others types of durable materials, the manufacture of wood products declined. As an example, Fisher Price toys were originally made from wood, and Fisher Price was a good customer of Huther’s until molded plastics grew in favor.

Huther Brothers began making other industrial cutting tools in the late 1960’s and 1970’s. The current president, George W. Huther III, a fourth generation member of the Huther family, continues directing the operation manufacturing industrial knives for most every industry. Those include corrugated paperboard and packaging, food, rubber, textiles, paper, insulation, plastics, and so on. Huther Brothers, Inc. is well known for their quality products worldwide.

Located in Rochester, NY, Huther Brothers has earned its international reputation of excellence. From patents on steel dado sets and groovers at the beginning of the 20th century, to state-of-the-art through-hardening of fine industrial cutting tools for today’s industry, we pride ourselves on producing the highest quality knives manufactured to OEM specifications. Quality control testing assures that each piece of steel is heat treated to a specific hardness.
